A funfair is coming to the village, and everyone is excited. Only Mařenka is in agony. She is supposed to marry a suitor whom she doesn not love. Mařenka's sweetheart, Jeník, consoles her, assuring her that their faithful love will overcome all the obstacles. However, Kecal is determined to arrange Mařenka's marriage to the stuttering and foolish Vašek at all costs. In the meantime, Jeník strikes a clever deal. But how will it all end when everyone is still sort of lying and only thinking of themselves? Will Jeník truly a better groom than Vašek? Has goodness prevailed? Really?
